Mechanical Pipe Gripping and Handling System
Designed and developed a mechanical Pipe Handler assembly for safe gripping and handling of cylindrical pipes. The project involved understanding functional requirements, creating detailed 3D CAD models, developing the complete assembly, generating manufacturing drawings, and preparing a Bill of Materials (BOM) for fabrication.
Several mechanisms can be used for pipe gripping and handling; however, many involve complex geometries and manufacturing processes. The challenge was to design a simple, robust, and cost-effective pipe handling solution that provided secure gripping while remaining easy to manufacture and assemble.
Multiple design approaches were considered before selecting a mechanically simple and robust pipe handling solution. The final design utilizes a pivoted jaw mechanism to achieve secure pipe gripping while reducing fabrication complexity through the use of standard manufacturing processes and readily available components. The project was carried through from 3D modeling and assembly development to manufacturing drawings and BOM generation.
Developed a manufacturable Pipe Handler assembly that balanced functionality, simplicity, and ease of fabrication. The project culminated in a complete engineering package comprising 3D models, assembly documentation, manufacturing drawings, and a Bill of Materials (BOM), ready for production use. The final design achieved the required pipe gripping functionality while maintaining a fabrication-friendly structure using standard components and manufacturing processes. Detailed engineering drawings and assembly documentation were prepared to support efficient manufacturing and assembly.
